Tourists Who Have Been Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 Can Enter the Country Without Travelers’ Health Insurance.
Great News for travelers and digital nomads wanting to come to Costa Rica! Starting August 1st, all tourists, adults and minors, who have completed their vaccination course against COVID-19 will be able to enter Costa Rica without purchasing a travel health insurance policy. The measurement was announced by the current minister of Tourism in a press conference held last Friday, July 9th. Just one year from the opening of the borders!
The approved vaccines include AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and Pfizer-BioNTech. The vaccination course must have been completed and administered a minimum of 14 days prior to arrival in the country. Proof of vaccination will be required, and the document must contain the name of the person, the date of each dose, and the pharmaceutical company, formula, and lot number of the vaccine. For U.S travelers, the COVID-19 vaccination record card will be accepted.
The completion of the Health Pass or “Pase de Salud” remains a requirement to enter the country, and it must be completed 72 hours prior to the trip. Tourists should attach the vaccination record card or proof of vaccination when filling out the form.
Health insurance for travelers will still be a mandatory requirement for tourists who have not completed their vaccination course. The insurance must be valid for the entire time staying in Costa Rica, and it must cover up to $50,000 for medical expenses and $2,000 for lodging expenses in the event of getting infected and/or quarantined due to COVID-19.
The Tourism Minister said in the press conference the following about the update in the guidelines:
“The country is seeing advancement in the vaccination of priority markets for the tourism industry in Costa Rica. To encourage the reactivation of international traveling, it is important to adjust the requirements for those who are not likely to become seriously ill, and therefore do not represent a financial risk to the state in terms of hospitalization costs.”
