The Central American Nation Has Partnered With the Restor Platform to Further Its Commitment to Environmental Transparency and Accountability.
Despite this year’s imminent change in government, Costa Rica has kept its pioneering spirit towards sustainable development, conservation, and ecology virtually unfazed. Just in the last couple of months, the Central American nation has confirmed strategic alliances with international organizations to help further the country’s goal of carbon-neutrality and being one of the world’s leaders in terms of environmental efforts.
The most recent update on Costa Rica’s unparalleled commitment has come by way of the innovative Restor platform, which brands itself as a science-based and open data opportunity to accelerate the restoration movement worldwide. Restor works by connecting people to scientific data, supply chains, funding, and other like-minded individuals who want to make a difference. The platform’s main motto is all about how anyone can be a restoration champion, thus subverting the idea that only billionaire philanthropists or NGOs can be part of global change.
By advocating for transparency, Restor highlights the many ways restoration can be embodied, from land protection and tree planting to indigenous cosmologies and supply chain ethics. The core mission is that the effectiveness of these different efforts can be seen and freely monitored in real time, thus establishing potential dialogues between different communities, organizations, and individuals; each one of them learning from each other’s processes.
In the case of Costa Rica, its partnership with Restor means a greater level of transparency and accountability for its conservation practices. The country will publish details of its Payments for Environmental Services projects in exchange for analytical data and monitoring tools.
Restor was created by ETH Zurich’s Crowther Lab and developed in collaboration with Google and is now an official partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration initiative. By incorporating the platform, Costa Rica has now become the first nation to do so, taking an important first step and hoping to provide another important example for the world to follow suit.
