In times like these with Covid-19 and a lot of political anxiety its really nice to hear some good news regarding a new charitable program in the Central Pacific’s Garabito county. The goal of this program is to assist local residents who are out of work due to the pandemic with a meaningful job to clean up beach areas in exchange for food packages. The name of the program is called “Sol Y Diarios,” which translates to “Sun and Food Kits”. The areas these heroic brigades are working in are Tarcoles, Quebrada Ganado, Punta Leona, Herradura, Jaco Beach, and a few other areas in the Garabito County. In addition to cleaning up the beach, they are also cleaning up some extremely difficult places to get to, like reefs and caves along the Central Pacific’s coastline. There are numerous brigades in this program, made up of up to 45 people per program. So far they have cleaned up 7 TONS of plastic, 2000 cigarette buts, and have planted a very impressive 690 trees.
Iconic sponsors have been coming forward to assist and donate Food Kits, such as Auto Mercado, Mayca, and Multiahorro Supermarket. There have been an admirable 200 Food Kits provided to the volunteers so far. The cost per Food Pack is $50 and is enough to feed a family of four for two weeks! There is also a Whole Foods Security partnership, which has donated an astonishing 2600 packs of food to local families in need.
